Provenance

This piece is made from silk cultivated from the cocoon of the mulberry silkworm, its long threads producing a refined yet durable silk. Silk production and weaving is an ancient craft in India. A natural material, it has a long history of human use and is still valued for many textile applications today. Silk was first discovered in China, then spread along the Silk Road during the later half of the first millennium BC. When it reached India, it became an immensely popular material among the royalty and the aristocracy, supplied by weaving centers developed in holy cities and trade centers. Today, India is the second largest silk producer in the world.
