Provenance

The BaTonga are famous for their basket weaving and geometric designs. These baskets are woven into intricate patterns from palm leaves, grasses, and vines. BaTonga baskets have a square base and a heavy rim, and are traditionally used for winnowing grain. Originally from Zimbabwe, the BaTonga in Zambia were displaced by the construction of the hydroelectric Kariba dam. Zambian BaTonga baskets are similar to Zimbabwean BaTonga baskets, but feature bolder designs.
