Provenance

In the Hindu faith, the tilaka is a mark worn usually on the forehead, though can sometimes be applied to the neck, hand, or chest. As a sign of devotion, tilaka may be worn on a daily basis or reserved for rites of passage and special religious occasions. The tilaka is applied using a red vermillion and yellow sandalwood powder. The pattern of application varies by sect of Hinduism. This vintage tikka box was used to store the powder used for tilaka.
